The first grammar you need.

What it is

Question words (what, where, who, when, why, how) name the information you are missing. They come first, before the verb or auxiliary.

Look

  • What is your name?
  • Where are you from?
  • Who is she?

Form

Positive(the answer) subject + verb + informationShe lives in Lisbon.
Negativequestion word + don't / doesn't + subject + verbWhy doesn't she live in Lisbon?

Use it when

  • You need a detail, not a yes/no answer.
  • You interview someone or fill in missing information.
  • You keep a conversation going.

Watch out!

  • What your name?

    What is your name?

    Don't drop 'is'.
