What it is

Connectors join two ideas inside one sentence: and adds, but contrasts, or offers a choice, because gives a reason, so gives a result.

Look

  • I like tea and coffee.
  • I like tea but I don't like coffee.
  • Tea or coffee?

Form

Use it when

  • You extend a short sentence into a longer one.
  • You explain a reason or a result.
  • You make writing flow instead of sounding like a list.

  • I was tired, so I went to bed.
  • We were hungry, so we stopped for lunch.
  • Tea or coffee?
  • It's small but comfortable.
  • She studies and works at the same time.

Watch out!

  • I stayed home, because.
