The first grammar you need.

What it is

A plural noun means more than one. Most nouns simply add -s; the spelling changes a little after certain endings, and a small group is irregular.

Look

  • one book β†’ two books
  • one box β†’ two boxesβ€” -x, -s, -ch, -sh β†’ +es
  • one child β†’ two childrenβ€” Irregular.

Form

Positivenoun + -s / -es (after s, sh, ch, x, o) / -ies (consonant + y)There are two buses and three taxis.
NegativeThere aren't + any + plural nounThere aren't any glasses on the table.
QuestionHow many + plural noun + …?How many children are in the class?
Short answerNumber + plural noun.Twenty-two children.

Use it when

  • You count things: three tickets.
  • You talk about people or objects in general: Dogs need exercise.
  • You make a shopping or packing list.

More examples

  • one man β†’ two men
  • I need new shoes.
  • The boxes are in the hall.
  • Those stories are true.
  • Two men and one woman were waiting.

Say it: Final -s sounds: /s/ books, /z/ dogs, /Ιͺz/ boxes.
