What it is

Two modal verbs of advice and obligation: 'must' says something is necessary, 'should' says it is a good idea. Both take the base verb.

Look

  • You must wear a seatbelt.
  • You should see a doctor.— Advice.
  • You shouldn't eat so much sugar.

Form

Meaning

Use it when

  • You state a rule: You must wear a helmet.
  • You give advice: You should rest.
  • You warn someone: You mustn't touch that.

Remember

  • must / should + base verb (no 'to', no -s)
